Private lessons:  $30/hr.

Internet lessons: $20/hr.

After school programs:   6 one and a half hour lessons for $69 or

9 lessons for $99.

ChesSmart student is a champion at regional US Chess Federation tournament!

Christopher Hoogenboom, son of Cathy and Chris Hoogenboom, was the champion of the Charleston Scholastic Kickoff held December 4, 2010.

Chris won all four games and garnered the first place trophy. Chris bested 17 other students at this regional event. His USCF rating soared to over 1,000, the highest in his chess career.

Chris’s younger brother, Casey, age 5, also competed. He placed a respectable 6th place out of 15 students.

Both Chris and Casey are students at Riverview Charter School in Beaufort, SC.

ChesSmart at Riverview Charter School

ChesSmart will start on Tuesday, August 24th at Riverview Charter School in Beaufort after class.

Bluffton ChesSmart boy wins US Chess Federation Tourney trophy

On Saturday, June 26 ChesSmart’s Chris McCorkindale won 2nd place and a trophy after only 7 ChesSmart lessons. Playing in his first USCF tournament, Chris, son of Becky and Chris McCorkindale, won 2 games, had one bye and lost won. GREAT JOB, CHRIS!

In a post tourny inteview, Chris was asked what he liked best about the tournament. Chris replied, “I got to play chess!” It wasn’t the wins or the trophy, but the joy of the game that he liked best!

ChesSmart Summer Camp @ Cross Schools

What: Learn chess basics, the chess board, official rules, openings, mid-game tactics, end-game theory. Learn how to beat your Dad, brother or friend in just two moves!

When: July 19th to July 23rd form 9:00 to 11:00.

ChesSmart Summer Camp @ Island Playground

What: LEARN CHESS FROM THE MAN THAT PLAYED THE WORLD CHAMPION!

Learn how to beat your Dad, Uncle, brother and friends! It’s fun, learning, traps, zaps, pins, forks, X-rays, lasers beams and how to win in 2 moves.

Who: Beginning chess for kids age 6 and up!

Tuition: $79 or $74 for Island Playground members.

Why: Chess improves math, computer and reading abilities. It organizes thinking, develops imagination, sportsmanship and self-esteem.

Instructor: Michael J. Kruse, ChesSmart founder/owner is an 18 year US Chess Federation member who has won money in tournaments in three states, tournament director, author and teacher of over 1,000 kids.  He battled World Champion, Garry Kasparov, for 32 moves in a  1997 simultaneous exhibition. Described by students as being “kind”, “patient”, “I learned from the best” and “Mr. Kruse rocks!”. Former president of Savannah Chess Club and instrumental in starting/continuing the Hilton Head Chess Club.
